Living, working and going to school safely in the earthquake zone, that is what matters to the National Coordinator for Groningen (NCG). The work of the NCG is not only to reinforce homes and other buildings, but also to enhance the quality of life and sustainability and to reinforce the regional economy. All this to build on a high opportunity Groningen.

The National Coordinator for Groningen is a collaboration of ten Groningen municipalities in the earthquake zone, the Province of Groningen and the Central Government.

Process of inspection and reinforcement

The NCG explains the process of inspection and reinforcement in two minutes in the video below.

Inspectie proces

In Groningen, everyone should be able to live, work and go to school safely.
That is why we are going to inspect every building in the centre of the earthquake area.
We will determine whether it is necessary to reinforce buildings, so they are more resistant to earthquakes.
The whole process consists of several steps.
These are first discussed with the resident.
Then inspectors will examine the house on both the inside and the outside.
We inspect the structure of the building.
Sometimes an extensive inspection is necessary.
We then drill holes in walls and ceilings.
And we dig in the garden to look at the foundations.
Of course, we leave everything behind in a tidy condition.
Any damage resulting from the inspection will be repaired.
Some buildings are very similar to other buildings.
In that case a simple inspection is sufficient.
We check for differences compared to houses that have already been inspected thoroughly.
For example, a different layout like an annex or dormer window.
After the inspection, we calculate with a computer if the building meets the safety requirements.
This takes several months.
Is the building strong enough?
In that case the proces stops here.
Is the building not strong enough?
In that case, specialists will calculate how to reinforce the building.
This is written down in a “reinforcement advice”.
This takes several months.
We discuss the reinforcement advice and the next steps with the owner.
Residents often move to a temporary home during the work activities.
The owner can also choose to make the building more sustainable at the same time.
There is subsidy available for this.
We do not start until we agree on the plans.
This way we ensure that all residents in the earthquake area live just as safely as the rest of the people in the Netherlands!
